Position Description:

Transportation Noise - Acoustical Engineer - Raleigh, NC

Infrastructure Consulting & Engineering, LLC (ICE) is seeking a Transportation Noise - Acoustical Engineer to join our team in Raleigh, North Carolina. This position is central to the development of comprehensive noise impact assessments and effective mitigation strategies for various transportation projects with regional state Departments of Transportation (DOTs). We seek an individual with a keen focus on acoustical engineering within an infrastructure context, who can ensure project compliance with regulatory standards while delivering innovative solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting thorough noise impact assessments and devising tailored abatement measures for transportation projects. 
  • Generating detailed reports adhering to the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA), Federal regulations, and State policies. 
  • Engaging in occasional fieldwork and regional travel to assess noise levels and evaluate project sites. 
  • Analyzing noise monitoring data with precision, managing data proficiently, and creating accurate computer models from design data. 
  • Evaluating traffic noise impacts and designing optimal configurations for sound barriers. 
  • Reviewing project plans and quantities to ensure accuracy and compliance with acoustical standards. 
  • Crafting comprehensive reports to communicate findings and recommendations effectively.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in adhering to formal regulatory and policy criteria, ensuring project compliance.
  • Experience in obtaining, analyzing, and documenting sound-level data accurately.
  • Skilled in engineering design, particularly within transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Proven track record of conducting transportation noise studies, from scoping to reporting, and coordinating with clients.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must complete a pre-employment screening; ICE is a drug-free workplace.

Education and Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Engineering Science, Industrial Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a Master's Degree in Acoustics / Acoustical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 5 years' relevant experience in applied acoustical engineering, including post-graduate study.
  • Strong familiarity with FHWA Traffic Noise Model (FHWA TNM v2.5) and formal training in its application required.
  • Proficiency in engineering drawing software (OpenRoads, Microstation, Geopak, AutoCAD, etc.), ArcGIS, and Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Demands

This position predominantly involves up to 8 hours per day at a computer workstation, with occasional standing and walking. The employee may occasionally lift lightweight office supplies and materials, typically not exceeding 20 pounds. The office environment is indoors, characterized by controlled temperatures and minimal exposure to adverse conditions. During fieldwork, the job involves moderate physical activity like walking, standing, bending, and climbing stairs or ladders. Inspectors may lift objects weighing up to 80 pounds occasionally. They work in different environments with loud noise, dust, dirt, and changing temperatures. Inspectors need to move skillfully around construction sites and conduct thorough inspections of materials and structures.

Expected Hours of Work

The ICE offices are open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, allowing an unpaid hour for lunch daily. This position may require overtime depending on project demands. 

Work Environment

Flexible in-office attendance based on project requirements; potential for majority home-based work for individuals demonstrating proficiency and reliability.
